Quoll Writer's purpose is to help you with your writing. And because you don’t need any distractions when you’re trying to focus on your writing, Quoll Writer has a minimalist interface. You’ll quickly get accustomed to this interface and you won’t have any problems using it to access all the functionality Quoll Writer has to offer. Speaking of which…

The minimalist interface may have you think that Quoll Writer doesn’t have that much to offer. That is not the case! As a matter of fact, Quoll Writer is packed with useful features. Here are the main ones: manage chapters, characters, locations, items, research items, and notes; link characters to scenes, locations to characters, and so on; there’s an integrated spell checker and synonym lookup tool; there’s a tool that identifies problems in your writing; you can import and export data; stay on top of everything with a handy idea board; and more.

A detailed User Guide is available online. It clearly presents every feature and every function that Quoll Writer has to offer. Turn to it if you need help using Quoll Writer.

There are lots of options to play with. It’s always a nice thing when you can play with settings and customize the way an application looks and works. What’s even nicer is that Quoll Writer very clearly labels these options (you’ll see labels like “How things look and sound” or “What things are called”) and presents a short description underneath the label.

Quoll Writer rewards you with achievements. Access the aforementioned User Guide and you’ll get an achievement entitled “Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi”. Use the tool that finds problems in your writing and you’ll get an achievement called “Things can only get better.” To see a list of all available achievements, click the cog icon from the upper right hand corner and then select Achievements. If these achievements annoy you, open the Options menu, click Achievements, and uncheck “Enable achievements.”

Quoll Writer is free and open source software written in Java. This means Quoll Writer needs Java to run on your PC. If you don’t have Java, Quoll Writer’s setup wizard will install it for you. When the setup wizard is done installing Quoll Writer and you launch the application for the first time, a Welcome prompt will show up. It will invite you to go over a getting started guide and it will help you create your first project.

There’s much to like about Quoll Writer: it is free and open source, it has a user friendly, minimalist interface, it comes bundled with lots of useful tools, including one that identifies problems in your writing. All in all, Quoll Writer can prove to be tremendously useful to writers.
